What are the origins of Fathers Day?

Fathers Day was first proposed in the US in 1909 by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Sonoras father was a war veteran whod raised his six children by himself. To show her appreciation for her amazing dad, Sonora founded a holiday celebrating fathers and fatherhood which would complement the already-established Mothers Day. It took a while for Fathers Day to take off but by the 1970s, it was made a permanent national holiday. These days, Fathers Day is celebrated across the nation by families gathering together to let the father figures in their lives know how much they care.
